New Parents Embrace the 3Ts at University of Chicago Medical Center
The TMW Center is thrilled to be working with partners at University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC), our home institution, to offer our 3Ts-Newborn intervention to all families in the hospital’s maternity ward. This evidence-based program provides parents of newborns with helpful information and concrete strategies for promoting their baby’s early cognitive and language development. Research has demonstrated that the program is effective at enhancing understanding of infant brain development, and qualitative feedback from participants and facilitators at UCMC is glowing. We are grateful to the Child Life Team for bringing 3Ts-Newborn to more families in our own community and for all they do to support families as they prepare to transition home with their new addition! Parental Tone Matters—and It’s Malleable
Promising results from our latest study, presented at the 2023 American Economic Association annual meeting, suggest that parental speech is malleable. Our analysis reveals that targeted interventions such as our 3Ts-Home Visiting Program can reduce disparities in parental speech, increase the use of positive tones (which are associated with a range of school readiness outcomes), and generate significant impacts on children’s language skills.
